Personnel of the 180 Battalion BSF (Border Security Force) camp under Gupteswar forest in Koraput district rescued a giant flying squirrel from the Ramgiri area and handed it over to forest officials on Tuesday.According to sources, the animal has been kept under observation and will undergo a veterinary examination.

Further action will be taken as per the directions of senior forest authorities.Locally referred to as the “flying mouse”, the giant flying squirrel is considered a rare species in this region.

Wildlife enthusiasts expressed happiness over its sighting after many years.“Due to deforestation and destruction of natural habitats, the population of such rare animals is rapidly declining. If forests and their ecosystems are protected, species like the giant flying squirrel can survive in Koraput,” said Krishna Keshav Sadangi, wildlife lover and environmentalist from Jeypore.

He further urged the government and the forest department to take proactive steps to conserve habitats and boost the population of such rare species in the district.
