“Her Scars Tell a Story, But Compassion Gave It a New Ending. “A Journey from Pain to Smile: Care Restores Hope in Nuapada”
Hope has returned to the face of Khirmani Majhi, a mentally challenged woman rescued from Khariar Block Square, thanks to more than a month of care, treatment, and compassion. Today, her smile reflects not only recovery but also the dedication of those who stood by her when everyone else had turned away.
When she was first spotted in a destitute condition, abandoned and friendless, the scene of her rescue was heart-wrenching. While being rescued, her head was severely injured with huge wounds that had been infested with hundreds of maggots. Without family, friends, or relatives to lean on, she faced a life of neglect and loneliness and was begging for food from roadside eateries in Khariar town. But it was the timely intervention and unwavering support of District Legal Services Authority Secretary, Navneeta Dash, that gave her a new beginning.
Ms. Dash, with exceptional commitment, took personal responsibility for ensuring the woman’s medical treatment, hygiene, and emotional well-being. From getting the patient rescued to guiding her through regular medical care, feeding and bathing with her own hands, Dash’s compassion became the backbone of her healing journey.
Ms.Dash instructed Khariar Taluk Legal Services Committee Panel Lawyer Alok Tiwari and Para Legal Volunteer Ratnanjali Senapati to rescue her, who both took her in an auto to Khariar CHC where the woman’s wounds were dressed first, and then Ms.Senapati brought her in an Ambulance to DHH, Nuapada, with the active assistance of social worker Shri. Rajendra Podh. While her wounds were dressed, there were hundreds of maggots (insects) all over the dressing room. As the patient had very low haemoglobin, two units of blood were also administered after Ms. Dash arranged blood donors with the assistance of Ms. Rachana Jain, Marwari Yuva Manch, Khariar Road.
Today, more than a month after the rescue, the woman is smiling and singing aloud, she is not only healthier but also regaining confidence to live with dignity. Her case stands as a shining example of how humanity, coupled with selfless service, can restore hope in the most difficult lives. After considerable healing of her wounds, she has recently revealed her name and the names of her parents, husband, son and 5 daughters. Efforts to trace out her family members are still on, so that attempts may be made to reintegrate her with her family after finding out why they had abandoned her.
The transformation of this woman has been hailed by locals and officials alike as a testament to the silent yet powerful role played by the District Legal Services Authority in extending justice and care beyond the courtroom.
