In a significant development, Lt Col Shrikant Prasad Purohit has been promoted to the rank of full Colonel after years of legal and professional uncertainty.

Purohit, who was arrested in 2008 in connection with the Malegaon blast case, had faced charges that were widely debated as controversial and politically motivated.
